Personal Statement

I am a dedicated Medical Microbiologist with extensive experience in interdisciplinary research and teaching. My primary research focuses on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in fungal and bacterial pathogens of significant public health concern. I employ a holistic One Health approach to investigate these organisms at the human – animal – environment interface, acknowledging the critical interconnectedness of ecosystems in the emergence and spread of resistance. A major emphasis of my work has been on WHO-priority pathogens including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus spp., and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) – and carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae, and clinically important Candida species, among others.

Beyond exploring conventional mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance, my work also investigates alternative antimicrobial strategies, particularly the potential of natural products as alternative to traditional antibiotic therapy. Combining molecular epidemiology and advanced laboratory diagnostics with translational research and cross-sectoral collaboration, I aim to drive innovative contributions to the global response to AMR by promoting sustainable, data-driven interventions and evidence-based public health policies.
