Personal Statement

Prof. Emmanuel Taiwo Idowu, has dedicated over two decades to advancing research and education in vector-borne diseases, especially malaria, schistosomiasis and onchocerciasis. His work focuses on understanding Plasmodium falciparum drug resistance and tracking insecticide resistance—critical challenges in modern disease control. His current research delves into screening indigenous medicinal plants for antimalarial properties and conducting resistance monitoring using WHO-standard protocols—a testament to his commitment to combining traditional knowledge with scientific rigor. Prof. Idowu’s scholarly footprint includes over 90 peer-reviewed publications and the successful supervision of ten Ph.D. candidates. He’s a trusted peer reviewer for top-tier journals and has attracted grants, such as the MIM-TDR/WHO Malaria Research Capability Strengthening Grant, as well as University of Lagos-funded studies on mosquito diversity and schistosomiasis drug efficacy. His collaborative projects with the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) on viral hemorrhagic fevers and consultancy work with GTZ/LAFIA PHC reflect his broad impact across Nigeria’s public health landscape. In the academic community, Prof. Idowu serves on key university committees, including the Central Research Committee and as Chairman of the Animal Ethics Committee. He also lends his expertise as an external examiner to postgraduate programmes across Nigerian universities. Prof Idowu is also a dedicated member of the Parasitology and Public Health Society of Nigeria since 1996 and currently coordinates the Southwest Zone and actively promotes public health advocacy and research collaboration.
