Marine Biology (Ecosystem Health and Risk Assessment)

  1. Personal Statement

Dr Amii Obiakara-Amaechi is an experienced and passionate Marine Biologist with over a decade of teaching and research in Marine Sciences, focusing on marine pollution, aquatic toxicology, and the impacts of anthropogenic stressors including microbial contamination on tropical ecosystems. Over the years, she has acquired and effectively demonstrated expertise in risk assessment of priority contaminants, with a strong commitment to inclusive, student-centered teaching and culturally responsive mentorship. Dr. Obiakara-Amaechi’s current research efforts aim to advance understanding of the impact of human-induced stressors and climate change influence on the health and resilience of marine and coastal ecosystems. Through active regional and international collaborations, she has consistently promoted interdisciplinary and inclusive science to address emerging environmental and public health challenges. As a member of the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), the Society of Toxicology (SOT), and Toxicologists of African Origin (TAO), she has made relevant contributions to global initiatives in sustainable development, capacity building, and science-informed policy.
