The microscope – parts of the instrument and procedure for proper use. Classification and Characteristics of animals from Phyla Protozoa, Porifera, Coelenterata, Platyhelminthes, Nematoda, Annelida to Arthropoda. General morphology of a typical animal in each phylum, life histories of some parasites, structure and function of animal tissues.

A general study of tissue nutrition, osmoregulation and excretion, membranes, transport, homeostasis and coordination in animals.

Analytical and experimental techniques used to explore invertebrate and vertebrate development include embryological manipulation (e.g. cell ablation, tissue grafting).  Students learn how to obtain, culture, and observe diverse marine embryos and larvae.  Practicals in tissue culturing and slide preparations.

A study of the distribution of animals in space, zoogeographical regions, means and factors of animal distribution.

Animal associations; nature, ecology and evolution of parasitism; host parasite relationships and host specificity; transmission and transmission patterns, major parasite vectors, epidemiological  studies and control strategies of parasitic diseases.

 

ZLY 333/ZLY 315:  Introductory Ecotoxicology and Pollution Management                    2 units

General principles of ecotoxicology and environmental pollution, – control and management in ecosystems.  Basic concepts of poison pollution, bioassays; bioaccumulation and biomagnification in ecosystems toxics, dose – response curves, toxicological statistics and their application.  Sources, types and biological effects of priority pollutants in ecosystems in Nigeria and their management including regulation on land, air and water.

Function and response of animals to their natural environment, role and importance of physiological processes, such as digestion and respiration, in the ecological relations of species in their natural habitats, the physiological mechanisms that result in adjustment of growth and / or allocation when animals are exposed to changes in their environment.

Introduction to conventions on biological diversity; fundamentals of biodiversity and conservation.  Implementation of the convention on biological diversity in Nigeria (status).  Institutional and legislative frameworks for biodiversity.

 

ZLY 337/ZLY 329:    Introduction to Biomonitoring                       2 units

Principles of biomonitoring and usefulness in ecosystem management.  Types and uses of indicator species; identification and use of physiological and anatomical biomarkers.  Practicals – field monitoring & assessments in ecosystems / industries / homes.

 

ZLY 338/ZLY 341:    Animal Breeding and Husbandry                          2 units

Introduction to methods and Techniques in identification, collection, cultivation and maintenance of invertebrates – edible species e.g. snails, cockles, oysters, periwinkles, whelks etc and lab animals e.g. mosquitoes, cockroaches etc) and vertebrates – edible species – amphibians, rabbits, chicks etc and lab animals e.g. Mice, reptiles etc.  General Biology of target animals, strategies in cultivation.  Practicals in selection of breeding sites, design and construction of breeding cages / ponds etc.  Field trips to local hate heries or other facilities.

ZLY 403/ZLY 411:    Ecosystem Structure, Function and Utilization II                  2 units

Ecosystem theory and its relevance to environmental sequences.  Hierarchy & life and interrelations practical population studies – sampling design and techniques in different ecosystems.  Genetic variability in organisms, natural and artificial selection – their determination and management.  Concepts in waste and agricultural management to minimize environmental impact.  Energy flow and nutrient cycles.

Selected topics in various fields of Zoology for presentation and discussion by students.

 

ZLY 409/ZLY 422:    Zoology Project                                        4 units

Experimental investigations for a duration of about five months.  A bound dissertation will be submitted by each student.

 

ZLY 410/ZLY 412:    Insect Physiology                                   2 units

Metabolism of insect, supply of food, food storage; osmoregulation and nitrogenous waste products; respiratory exchanges; neuromuscular physiology; the physiology of reproduction and development.

 

 

ZLY 411/ZLY 413:    Pesticide Science & Principles of Pest Management                 2 units

Types, sources and uses of pesticides. Pesticide chemistry, mode of actions and formulations.  Pest concept, economic injury level, economic thresholds, methods of pest control and their combination into integrated pest management programmes.

 

ZLY 413/ZLY 414:    Practical Application of Pesticides                                1 unit

A practical course encompassing, diagnosis / identification of pest problems in human habitats / crops, choice of pesticides, preparation of pesticide solutions, Spraying equipment – types, choice, handling, maintenance and use of sprayers in applying pesticides against pests and vectors in homes, industry and crop fields.  Safe handling and disposal of pesticides.

 

ZLY 414/ZLY 415:    Agrocosystems & Pests of West Africa                            2 units

West African Agricultural crops, the agroecosystems – their characteristics, and sampling techniques for pests and non-target populations, important pests of West African food and cash crops – their biology, ecology, adaptations and natural enemies.

 

ZLY 415/ZLY 423:    Storage and Wood Entomology                           2 units

Identification, sources and modes of infestation of stored produce (grain, dried fish / meat etc) and wood insect pests.  Types of storage systems – traditional and modern – physico – chemical conditions.  Nature of pest damage and assessments.  Biology & ecology of stored product pests and wood damaging termites and other insects.  Control of storage and wood pests including use of Natural products & fumigation.  Preventive and Mitigation control measures for pests on wooden furniture and in buildings.

 

ZLY 416/ZLY 424:    Introductory Forensic Entomology                        2 units

General introduction to forensic Entomology – concepts and history.  Use of insects in the estimation of Post mortem intervals & usefulness in crime investigation.  Biology & ecology of insects and other arthropods associated with dead bodies; collection methods and case studies.

 

ZLY 417/ZLY 425:    Apiculture / Beekeeping                               3 units

Study of bees-bee-keeping equipments, establishment of bee colonies in hives; how bees make honey including management of bee colonies in dry and wet season in tropics.  Handling of bees, supplementary diets, harvesting of honey and protection of bee colonies from pests and diseases.  Traditional & urban bee-keeping, bee products, uses, preservation and marketing.

 

ZLY 418/ZLY 426:    Medical and Veterinary Entomology                             3 units

Study of the major groups of arthropods and associated pathogens that affect the health and well-being of humans and other animals of Veterinary / Agricultural significance.  Identification, classification, assessment of methods of injury, habits, vector mechanisms & competence of insects, ticks, mites etc that act as vectors of diseases.  Control of vectors in the overall management of vector borne diseases.  Practical inclusive.

Host parasite interactions, parasite adaptations in relation to habitats, effects of parasitism, epidemiological measurements in parasitology, immunology of parasites.

Basic sequence analysis, introduction to bioinformatics, genetic analysis, protein structure and functions, genomics and proteomics.

Principles of pollution management including prevention, containment, clean-up, mitigation and rehabilitation.  Environmental awareness – theory and practice.  Introduction to Health safety and Environment policy as practiced in industry.  Environmental regulation and standards.

Type of pollutants in Nigeria, Global – sources, routes of entry into environment, biological effects / impacts, control and management.

Field work and case studies including interaction with industry, visits to polluted sites, their critical evaluation and management strategies.

A general study of the physical, chemical and ecological factors of rivers, streams, ponds, lakes and bogs, their fauna and flora, biological productivity, distribution of freshwater organisms, the influence of man on freshwater communities.

 

ZLY 436/ ZLY 444:   Wildlife Conservation, Zoos and Nature Parks                       3 units

Principles of animal conservation in natural parks and confinements.  Strategies for measuring wildlife populations and monitoring.  Protection of wild fauna via legislation / regulations, control of export and import, possession and trade. Protection of natural habitats through creation of Nature reserves parks, wildlife sanctuaries, forest & game reserves in Nigeria and their management, also international protected areas and Biosphere reserves management.  Field trips and practicals.
