The Faculty of Science, University of Lagos was established in 1964, and comprised two schools; the school of Biological Sciences and the School of Physical Sciences.
In October, 1967, the two Schools became autonomous teaching units, each with its own Dean and Board. The Department of Zoology was created from the Faculty of Science in 1964. In the late 1970s the School of Biological Sciences was reduced to a Department of Biological Sciences with a Zoology degree programme as a unit. On December 12, 1997 two new departments were created by Senate from the former Department of Biological Sciences. Department of Botany and Microbiology and Department of Zoology, Marine Biology and Fisheries. Senate further split the Department of Zoology, Marine Biology and Fisheries into two on 25th September, 2002: Department of Zoology (already existing) and Department of Marine Sciences (newly created).
