General characteristics, similarities, differences and economic importance of viruses, bacteria, fungi, lower green and vascular plants. Ecological adaptation of various plant forms. Introduction to Ethnobotany or traditional medicine.

 

200 LEVEL

 

BTN 201: Variety of Plants I                                                                                                                         3 units

Classification range of form and organisation, life histories and representative members of viruses, bacteria, fungi, algae, bryophytes and pteridophytes. The germination, growth and performance of halophytes.

 

BTN 202: Variety of Plants II                                                                                                                        3 units

Morphology, ecology, life histories and embryology of some Gymnosperms and Angiosperms.

 

 

BTN 203 Introductory Ecology                                                                                                                     3 units

Introduction and definition: biosphere, lithosphere and hydrosphere. Ecosystem: biotic and biotic components, concepts of limiting factors. Energy flow in ecosystems: Food chain and food webs. Tropic level and ecological pyramids. Biogeochemical cycling. Productivity population characteristics. Population growth and factors regulating population size. BTN 301: Plant Physiology I                                                                                                                          3 units

Fundamentals of plant physiology with special reference to the physical and chemical properties of cells. Plant water relations, physiology of stomata, mineral nutrition, photosynthesis, glycolysis and respiration, chemistry of metabolic inhibitors.

 

BTN 302: Plant Physiology II                                                                                                                        3 units

Prerequisite: BTN 301

Growth and movements, growth regulation, enzymes reactions; physiological aspects of crop yield.

 

BTN 303: Mycology I                                                                                                                                       3 units

The morphology, classification and economic importance of fungi.

 

BTN 304: Phycology I                                                                                                                                      3 units

Prerequisite: BTN 201

The structure, reproduction, ecology and classification of algae.

 

BTN 305: Plant Anatomy                                                                                                                                3 units

The organisation of the plant body. The Plant cell. Cell organelles and their functions. Meristem and cell differentiation. Cell types mature tissues and tissue systems. The cambium and its derivatives. Anatomy of monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous stems. Roots and leaves. Periderm-formation, structure and functions.

 

BTN 307: Flowering Plants Systematics                                                                                                     3 units

The principle of taxonomy, the units of classification; the taxonomic hierarchy, methods used in assessing relationships, delimitation of taxa and attribution of rank. The concept of characters.

 

 

BTN 309: General Techniques in Botany                                                                                                   2 units

Botanical drawings, microscopy and calibration of microscopes. Preparation of slides.

Sectioning of planet and tissue’s techniques in culturing plant tissues.

 

BTN 310 Introduction to Ethnobotany                                                                                                        3 units

Pre-requisite: BTN 202     

Plants used for treating diseases. Ethno veterinary medicinal plants and bioactive agent’s collection, preservation and conservation techniques. Taxonomy, ecology, biochemistry, distribution, cultural societies and contemporary use of mind-altering drug plants. Examples from primitive, traditional and modern societies.

 

BTN 312 Introduction to Horticulture                                                                                                        3 units

Climate and seasons, compost; classification of horticultural planet growths, and Maturing plants; tools and equipment. Cultivation and propagation, diseases and pests. Understanding the landscape, rock gardens.

 

BTN 320: Introduction to Paleobotany                                                                                                       3 units

The study of fossil plants. Formation of fossils. Kinds of fossil plants and their classification. The pollen grain, its form and function. Analysis and diagram. Application of pollen analysis.

                                                                                               

SIW 301: Industrial Attachment                                                                                                                  3 units

Industrial field experience in any one of the following: – Afforestation, Applied plant anatomy, Aquatic pollution biology, Horticulture, Biotechnology, Palynology, etc.

 

BTN 306: Bryophytes and Pteridophytes                                                                                                   3 units

Structures, reproduction, classification, ecology and evolutionary relationships of mosses, ferns and related groups, fossils.

BTN 401: Nigerian Vegetation                                                                                                                      2 units

Study of the vegetation types in Nigeria. Physiognomy of trees and shrubs of the Nigerian rain forest and savannah – buttresses, stilt roots, pneumatophores, bole and bark characteristics, leaf size and shape, phenology. Methods of vegetation description and analysis. (Extensive field trips and practical).

 

BTN 402: Ecological Methods                                                                                                                       2 units

Approach to environmental issues for quantitative treatment. Economic numeracy using calculations, graphs and simple models to explain the quantitative aspects of environmental issues.

 

BTN 403: Economic Botany                                                                                                                           3 units

Botany and cultivation of plant species with particular reference to Nigeria economic plants.

 

BTN 404: Mycology II                                                                                                                                     2 units

Prerequisite: BTN 303

Culture media and cultural techniques in mycology. Constituents of the fungal cell. Structure and function of hyphae. Membrane and membrane-bound organelles. Fungal saprophytion. Fungal parasitism. Spores and their dispersal. Predatory fungi and coprophilous fungi. Fungi in extreme environments.

 

 

 

 

BTN 405: Principles of Plant Pathology                                                                                                      3 units

Prerequisite: BTN 303

The concept of diseases, infection, host-parasite relations and control of plant diseases. Description of selected diseases of Nigerian crops.

 

BTN 406: Plant Physiology III                                                                                                             3 units

Prerequisite: BTN 301 & BTN 302

Transport phenomena in plants, physiology of seasonal development, flowering and flowering hormones; dormancy, seed germination and senescence. Endogenous rhythms. Implications in plant technology.

 

BTN 407: Primary and Secondary Metabolites                                                                                    3 units Prerequisite: CHM 203

Nitrogen, carbohydrate, protein and lipid metabolism. Nucleic acids and protein biosynthesis. Biochemical aspects.

 

BTN 409: Phycology II                                                                                                                        2 units

Prerequisite: CHM 203

Aspects of the morphology, taxonomy and phytogeography of algae and their physiology in the marine, brackish and fresh water environments.

 

BTN 410: Plant Taxonomy and Biosystematics                                                                                        3 units

The basis of variation: genotype and phenotype. Biosystematic categories and gene exchange. Principles and methods of identification.

Vegetable cultivation, fruit production, seed production. Economic importance of mushroom. Collection, classification and preservation of mushrooms. Spawn production and groping.

 

BTN 418: Plants and Environmental Pollution Monitoring                                                                 3 units

The use of algae, lichens, bryophytes and higher plants in monitoring air pollution. The use of algae as indicators of aquatic pollution. Effect of pollution on plant distribution. The merits and demerits of using various taxonomic groups as indicators.

 

BTN 419: Fungal physiology                                                                                                                         3 units

(Prerequisite: BTN 303)

Composition of fungal cells. Liberation and germination of spores. Growth and reproduction. Nutrition and metabolism. Synthesis of lipids and proteins, vitamin requirement and their production. Microbial antagonism, biochemical genetics, protoplasmic activity: Dimorphism.

 

 

BTN 420: Palynology                                                                                                                                       3 units

Forms, morphogenetic and functions of pollen and spores: Evolutionary trends, palynological techniques and application morphology in Harmonegathy. Pollen morphology in relation to taxonomy.

 

BTN 423: Introduction Plant Biotechnology                                                                                             3 units

Plant tissue culture techniques and uses. Renewable energy sources from plants. Application of plant tissue culture in breeding.

 

BTN 425: Conservation of Natural Resources                                                                                          3 units

Renewable and non-renewable resources. Effect and control of land degradation, erosion and desertification. Study of plant based aquatic resources.

 

BTN 426: Forensic Botany                                                                                                                             3 units

Introduction to Forensic Botany. The use of Biological and Botanical Evidence, Plant identification by DNA, Forensic palynology.
